Our old friend NorthShore physical therapist Ann Wilczynski returned for the first of a series of sessions to help improve Maureen's posture while sitting. The following bullet points summarize Ann's visit:

  • Ann tried as gently as possible to convey that there is not a lot she can do to improve Maureen's posture. She observed that Maureen's core has deteriorated simply due to the fact that she is no longer walking.

  • Ann took Maureen's temperature. It was 98.1. She also took her blood pressure: 126/62.

  • Maya gave a recap of the hand, arm and leg exercises we do to date as a part of our regular routine. Ann encouraged all of us to continue these exercises.

  • Ann did recommend one new technique. The caregiver:

    1. Stands behind Maureen

    2. Leans their stomach into the day chair/Maureen's back

    3. Places their hands on the front of Maureen's shoulders and

    4. Gently pulls straight back

  • Ann also suggested that when Maureen's head is angled a few degrees to the left, as happens more often, we sit and/or engage Maureen from her right side. This will hopefully provide Maureen the incentive to look right.

  • We also discussed the purchase of a geri chair. Ann supported the idea because Maureen's head slumps down so significantly quite often.

  • We described Maureen's positioning while lying in bed—a rotation between left and right sides. Ann said it would be best for Maureen to be rotated in three positions: on her left side, back and right side. According to Ann, there is a value in Maureen lying on her back in bed.

  • Ann will make a minimum of four visits to the house. Her next visit will be on July 6 @ 10:00AM. A second visit will take place next week on July 8 or 9.

  • Mobile phone: 773-972-0940.
