Essential importance of specifically documenting signs of pain or discomfort

One of our core goals throughout this journey has always been and always will be to maximize Maureen's comfort and minimize her pain.

At the same time, we do not want to overload her fragile system with too many pills/medications—the administration of which requires Maureen to swallow something. Swallowing can lead to coughing which in turn often requires suctioning.

Documenting specific verbal and/or non-verbal signs of pain in the blog is essential. It is not sufficient to write "Maureen looks like she is in pain." For everyone's benefit, please take your description to the next level and specifically describe what you observe or hear. Examples include:

  • Maureen's forehead/brow is furrowed (crinkled). There are lines in her forehaed and/or between her eyes.

  • She is audibly moaning or groaning.

  • Her legs kick or thrash.

  • Maureen clenches her hands.

  • Clenches jaw

  • Grinds teeth

In conclusion, we strive to maximize Maureen's comfort by minimizing pain while at the same time not overmedicate her.
