Summary of Feb. 4 seizure

bjtm65
  • Maureen fell asleep at approximately 10:00AM in the lift recliner.

  • She began to wake up at 12:30PM. Her arms suddenly twitched several times at 12:31PM. The seizure began at this time. Maureen’s eyes rolled up in the back of her head. Her face turned pale and a slight shade of blue. Maureen’s head tilted straight back about 10 degrees.

  • Brian and Maya immediately turned Maureen on her right side and made sure nothing was blocking her mouth. They also adjusted the lift recliner so that Maureen was laying essentially flat. Maya then went to get Tom. He came to Maureen’s side immediately.

  • As the seizure started, Maureen expelled a good amount of foam and saliva from her mouth. After several minutes, Maureen began to spit out some of the smoothie she had for breakfast.

  • They checked her heart rate, oxygen level and temperature every few minutes. The oxygen level was low the first few times we checked it —in the neighborhood of 88-90. All subsequent readings exceeded 95. Heart rate was a bit high at first – in the neighborhood of 110. As with the oxygen rate, all subsequent readings were satisfactory. We never had any aberrant temperature readings.

  • The foam, saliva and smoothie stopped coming out of Maureen’s mouth about 4-5 minutes into the seizure.

  • The actual seizure lasted for approximately 10-12 minutes.

  • Maureen had a substantial amount of congestion in her nose. It made it difficult for her to breathe.

  • They sat Maureen up in the lift recliner with her head positioned straight up.

  • For the next 90 minutes, Tom, Maya and Brian engaged Maureen by speaking to her and holding/massaging her hands and feet. She gradually began to squeeze their hands and move her feet.

  • They did not attempt at any point to take Maureen out of the lift recliner.

  • One fundamental difference between this seizure and the last two is that Maureen did not open her eyes after the seizure stopped. According to Tom, Maureen’s eyes were open by the time the paramedics took her to the hospital during the initial stages of the first two seizures.

  • Maureen began to open her eyes for extended periods of time at 325PM—almost three hours after the seizure began.
